Driver Fitting
The driver sits at the top row of every matrix we build. Get its carry number wrong and every club underneath it inherits the problem — a fairway wood pushed into a launch window it was never meant to cover.
Every Swing Logged Against the Row Below It
Our launch monitor captures ball speed, launch angle, spin rate, spin axis, smash factor, and attack angle on every swing — with your current driver and every demo head we test side by side. But we don't stop at the driver's own numbers.
Once a target carry is locked in, we immediately check it against your fairway wood or hybrid row. If the gap runs under roughly 15 yards, we flag it before you leave the bay, because that's usually a sign the driver (or the club under it) needs another look.
What Actually Changes in a Driver Fitting
Loft & Face Angle
Adjustable hosels let us dial loft in half-degree steps. A negative attack angle usually calls for more static loft than the number stamped on the head.
Shaft Weight & Flex
Shaft weight shapes swing timing more than the flex label alone. We test across weight classes to find the combination with the most repeatable strike.
Head Design & MOI
Higher-MOI heads resist twisting on off-center strikes; lower-MOI heads often suit players who shape shots on demand.
Length
A shorter, better-controlled driver frequently outperforms a longer one on center-strike percentage — which usually beats a few extra yards of theoretical distance.
Center of Gravity
CG location shapes launch and spin independent of loft. Low-back CG heads generally raise launch while lowering spin for players chasing carry.
Target Carry
Whatever number the driver lands on becomes the anchor for the entire top of the matrix, so we lock it in deliberately, not by accident.
What a Driver Fitting Can Fix
The Slice
A left-to-right spin axis tilt is usually a face-to-path issue, but the right shaft and loft combination can reduce curvature meaningfully while you work on swing mechanics.
Low, Knuckling Shots
Insufficient spin and launch — often too little static loft for your attack angle — causes shots to fall short of their potential. Adjusting loft and CG typically resolves this.
Driver-to-Fairway-Wood Overlap
If your fairway wood carries nearly as far as your driver, the driver fitting is the fastest way to widen that gap rather than adjusting the fairway wood alone.
Inconsistent Strike Location
If dispersion shows strikes scattered across the face, a higher-MOI head paired with the right length and lie can shrink that pattern significantly.
Fairway Wood Fitting
Fairway woods are the most common overlap we find on a first-visit matrix — carrying almost as far as the driver above them, or nearly matching the hybrid below. This session exists to fix exactly that.
The Bridge Row Between Driver and Hybrid
A fairway wood only earns its place in the bag if it fills real distance between your driver and your next club down. We capture ball speed, spin, and turf interaction on your current 3-wood or 5-wood, then compare that carry number directly against both neighbors on your matrix.
If the gap above or below runs tight, we test alternate lofts and head styles until the row actually earns its spot — sometimes that means a stronger 3-wood, sometimes it means dropping to a 7-wood instead.
What We Adjust
Loft
Half-degree-equivalent loft changes shift carry meaningfully on a fairway wood, which is exactly the lever we use to close a gap without touching your driver spec.
Sole Design
Wider, shallower soles glide better through Rockford's clay-loam turf on tighter fairway lies; deeper-faced designs favor players who catch the ball cleanly off a tee.
Shaft Weight
A lighter shaft than your driver can raise clubhead speed just enough to keep the launch window distinct from the club above it.

Too Close to the Driver
If your 3-wood is only a few yards short of your driver, a loft or shaft change — or moving to a smaller-headed 4-wood — usually widens the gap.
Ballooning From the Turf
Excess spin off tight lies is often a sole-and-loft mismatch for your attack angle rather than a swing flaw.
Duplicate Coverage With a Hybrid
If both clubs land inside a 5-yard band, we typically recommend carrying only one — the matrix makes that decision easy to see.
Inconsistent Off the Deck
A sole better matched to your attack angle and typical turf conditions often fixes fat and thin contact more reliably than a swing change alone.
Hybrid Fitting
The hybrid row is where most set matrices go wrong — either duplicating a long iron that's still in the bag, or leaving a gap where a long iron used to be and nothing has replaced it.
Testing the Row It's Replacing, Head to Head
We measure your current long iron (or the hybrid you're already carrying) alongside every hybrid candidate we test, on the same launch monitor, in the same session. That direct comparison is what tells us whether a hybrid should replace a 3- or 4-iron outright, or sit between two clubs that already earn their place.
Once a hybrid's carry number is set, we check it against both the fairway wood above and the next iron below to make sure the whole transition zone reads cleanly on paper.
Hybrid or Long Iron? The Matrix Decides
Higher, Softer-Landing Flight
Hybrids generally launch higher and stop faster on firm greens than a comparable long iron — useful if your matrix shows approach shots landing hot.
Turf Forgiveness
A wider, rounded sole recovers better from slightly heavy or thin contact than a long iron's thinner sole, particularly from rough.
Consistent Set Length
We match hybrid length and lie to the iron it's replacing so the length-progression column on your matrix stays smooth, not stepped.

Duplicate Carry With a Long Iron
If your hybrid and 4-iron land within a few yards of each other, one of them is redundant — the matrix makes it obvious which to keep.

Individual iron fittings often nail the club in your hand and miss the pattern across the set. We fit every iron against the rows on both sides of it, so the whole run steps evenly instead of bunching or spreading unpredictably.
Reading the Set as a Progression, Not Nine Individual Clubs
Dynamic lie angle, loft, length, and carry are captured on every iron in your bag, plotted as one continuous column on your matrix. We're not just checking whether your 7-iron flies the right distance — we're checking whether it flies a clean, even step away from your 6-iron and 8-iron.
Uneven steps are one of the most common findings on a first-visit matrix: a 4-yard gap between two irons, followed by a 14-yard gap between the next two. That inconsistency usually traces back to head-weight variance or a length build that never got checked as a set.

Lie Angle
Even a two-degree lie miss shifts start line meaningfully. We check it dynamically, under load, not with a static bench reading alone.
Loft Progression
Modern strong-lofted irons can compress gaps between the mid-irons and the pitching wedge — we verify the actual carry steps, not the numbers stamped on the sole.
Length
Standard half-inch length increments don't fit every player evenly. We test whether your matrix holds together better on a custom progression instead.
Shaft Flex & Weight
Shaft choice shapes both distance and dispersion consistency, and gets tested identically across every iron in the set, not just the one you brought in for comparison.
Grip Size
An oversized or undersized grip quietly shifts face angle at impact. We check it once and apply it consistently across the set.
Set Composition
Where the set should start and stop — long iron vs. hybrid, gap wedge vs. extra iron — gets decided by the matrix, not tradition.

Uneven Carry Steps
A set that bunches distance in the middle and spreads it at the ends is usually a build issue, not a swing issue — correctable with head weight and length adjustments.
Drifting Lie Angle
Sets purchased in pieces over several years often carry two or three degrees of lie drift from top to bottom of the set that nobody has ever measured together.
Inconsistent Dispersion
If your miss pattern changes shape from club to club, dynamic lie and shaft consistency are usually the first two things we check.
Mixed-Brand Drift
Combining irons from two manufacturers without checking length and loft standards against each other is one of the most common causes of matrix gaps we see.
Wedge Fitting
The wedge rows close out the bottom of your matrix, and they're where we most often find bounce chosen for the wrong turf, or loft gaps that leave a 30-yard hole between your pitching wedge and your sand wedge.
Closing the Matrix Without a Dead Zone
We measure carry distance, spin, and descent angle on every wedge you carry, along with your pitching wedge, so the whole short-game run reads as one continuous ladder rather than three disconnected clubs. Even loft gaps — typically 4 to 6 degrees between wedges — get confirmed against your actual carry numbers, not just the stamped loft.
Bounce and grind are then matched against how you actually take turf, tested on mats that approximate the firm, clay-loam conditions common around Rockford through summer and early fall.
What Actually Changes in a Wedge Fitting
Loft Spacing
We check the actual carry gap between wedges, not just the stamped loft difference — spin and trajectory can shrink or widen a gap that looks even on paper.
Bounce & Grind
A shallow attack angle and firm turf usually call for lower bounce; a steeper attack angle or softer conditions usually call for more.
Length & Lie
Wedge length and lie should continue the same progression as your irons, not reset to a generic off-the-rack spec.

A Dead Zone Below the PW
If there's a 25–30 yard hole between your pitching wedge and your next wedge, an added gap wedge or loft adjustment closes it cleanly.
Bounce Fighting Your Turf
Too much bounce on firm turf leads to thin, bladed contact; too little on soft turf leads to chunked shots — both are usually a spec mismatch, not a technique flaw.
Overlapping Wedge Distances
Two wedges landing within a few yards of each other means one isn't earning its slot — common in bags carrying four wedges without ever checking the matrix.
Lie Drift From the Irons
Wedges bought separately from an iron set frequently sit a degree or two off the rest of the progression — we bring them back in line.
Putter Fitting
The putter closes out the matrix, and it's the row most golfers have never had checked at all — picked off a rack for looks rather than fit to their stroke and posture.
Length and Lie Come From Your Posture, Not a Chart
We use a dedicated stroke-path capture system to log your putter's arc shape, face rotation through impact, and tempo, alongside a posture check at address. Length and lie angle are set from where your eyes and hands actually sit over the ball — not from a height-based chart that ignores your setup entirely.
Toe hang and face balance are matched to your stroke arc: a face-balanced head generally suits a straighter stroke path, while more toe hang complements an arcing stroke.
What Actually Changes in a Putter Fitting
Length
Too long or too short changes your eye line and posture at address, which shifts start line before the stroke even begins.
Lie Angle
An upright or flat lie tilts the face relative to the ground at address, independent of how square your stroke path is.
Head Weight & Balance
Total head weight and toe hang shape how much the face naturally opens and closes through the stroke — matched to your tempo, not a generic model.
