How Matrix Rows Interlock From Driver to Wedge
Change one club's target carry and the ripple runs through the whole bag. Here's how a decision at the top of the matrix constrains everything underneath it.
It's tempting to think of driver fitting, iron fitting, and wedge fitting as three separate projects that happen to share a bag. In a matrix build, they're not separate at all — they're one continuous chain, and a decision made at the top row changes what "correct" looks like for every row underneath it.
The Driver Sets the Ceiling
Once your driver's carry number is locked in during a fitting, that number becomes the reference point for the fairway wood row. A fairway wood that carries too close to the driver isn't earning its place in the bag — but "too close" only means something relative to that driver number. Change the driver and you change what counts as a healthy gap below it.
The Middle of the Bag Inherits Both Directions
Hybrids and long irons sit in the most constrained position on the whole matrix — they have to satisfy a gap requirement against the fairway wood above and the mid-irons below simultaneously. This is exactly why the hybrid-or-long-iron decision is so often unresolved in isolated fittings: solving it correctly requires knowing both neighboring rows at once, not just the club in question.
A hybrid fit without checking both neighbors is a guess with good data behind it, not a solved row.
The Iron Set Sets the Rhythm for the Wedges
Wedge loft spacing is typically planned as a continuation of the iron set's carry rhythm, not as an independent decision. If your irons step down in roughly 10-yard increments, your wedges should generally continue that rhythm rather than resetting to a different spacing standard, which is a common cause of the "dead zone below the pitching wedge" we see on client matrices.
Why This Means Sessions Should Reference Each Other
This interlocking structure is exactly why we log every session into the same working matrix, even when you're only booking a single club. A driver fitting six months after your last iron session still gets checked against those iron numbers, because the two are never actually independent — they're two rows on the same grid.

Your bag isn't fourteen separate fitting decisions that happen to live in the same golf bag. It's one chain of constraints running from driver to wedge, where each row's answer depends partly on the rows next to it. Fitting sessions that ignore that chain can still produce good individual clubs — they just can't guarantee a good set.
