Where Set Matrices Break Down

Nobody sets out to build a mismatched bag. Set matrices break down gradually, usually because clubs were purchased at different times, from different fittings, by different people, without ever being checked against each other afterward. Three spots account for the overwhelming majority of the problems we find.

1. The Fairway Wood / Hybrid Overlap

This is the single most common flag on a first-visit matrix. A 3-wood purchased for its own merits and a hybrid purchased separately, months or years apart, frequently end up carrying within a few yards of each other. Neither club was fit incorrectly on its own — the problem only exists in the relationship between them, which is exactly the kind of issue an isolated fitting can't catch.

2. The Long Iron / Hybrid Gap

The opposite failure shows up just as often: a golfer drops their long irons for hybrids, or vice versa, and the replacement club never gets checked against the loft it's supposed to be covering. The result is a hole in the matrix — a 15 to 20 yard stretch with nothing in the bag that reliably covers it, discovered only on the course when a shot falls between two clubs.

Gaps and overlaps are mirror images of the same root cause: a club that was never checked against its neighbors.

3. Lie Angle Drift Between the Irons and the Wedges

Irons and wedges are frequently purchased as separate categories, sometimes from different manufacturers, and lie angle standards aren't universal across brands. It's common to find irons sitting two to three degrees flatter or more upright than the wedges right next to them in the bag — a jump that shows up nowhere on an individual fitting report for either category alone.

Why Isolated Fittings Miss All Three

Each of these failure points requires comparing two clubs that were, in almost every case, fit during separate appointments with separate reference points. A driver fitting has no visibility into your iron set. An iron fitting has no visibility into wedges purchased two years later. The only way to catch any of the three is to log every club into one continuous matrix and check it as a whole, which is the entire premise behind matrix fitting in the first place.

If your bag has never been laid out end to end on one sheet, there's a reasonable chance one of these three issues is already sitting in it. None of them are visible from inside a single-category fitting — they only show up once the whole matrix is on the table.
